Katherine owens/ Undermain fund for new work

I’ve received the Katherine Owens/Undermain Fund for New Work for 2023! This award, established by Dallas’ Undermain Theatre provides funding for one emerging playwright per year, and creates a pathway toward a production of their work on the Undermain stage. I’m so thrilled to collaborate with the brilliant minds at Undermain and to bring my work to a new community of artists.

Check out the full announcement below:

For 40 seasons the Undermain Theatre has been bringing new work for the theater to the Undermain stage in Dallas and beyond. In 2019, after the passing of Undermain’s founding Artistic Director and guiding force Katherine Owens, Producing Artistic Director Bruce DuBose and the Undermain Theatre Board of Trustees established the Katherine Owens/Undermain Fund for New Work. Its mission is to carry on Katherine’s lifelong commitment to poetic, thought-provoking new work and provide a continuing influence in the American Theater scene by funding theater artists in their pursuit of creating new works for the American stage.

Undermain Theatre is pleased to announce the 2023 recipient of $10,000 from the Katherine Owens/Undermain Fund for New Work to playwright Jarrett King for his ongoing work in the American Theater, with an eye toward the future production of a new play for the Undermain stage.

Frog splash WINS!

My next play in development, Frog Splash, has won Definition Theater’s Amplify New Play Commission!

This process will allow me (and three other fantastic playwrights) to develop this play over two years with the support and collaboration of Definition Theatre. I’m so excited for all that’s to come—this play is already shaping up to be something special.

It's 2009. Ray and Fleet are best friends and pro wrestling mega-nerds who own a VHS tape of an extremely rare match. When someone makes them a very (very) large cash offer for the footage, their seemingly unbeatable friendship begins to unravel. A comedy about fandom, myth, and whoop-ass.

Learn more at the Definition Theater website, and watch the winning excerpt of Frog Splash below.

St. Miles Final Reading

My time as a playwright-in-residence at the Goodman Theatre ended this summer with the triumphant reading of my play, St. Miles. This magnificent cast performed their hearts out for a sold-out audience in the Healy Rehearsal Hall. Lots of laughs, lots of tears, and no shortage of talent.
